7 reasons why running is the best exercise for busy mums

7 reasons why running is the best exercise for busy mums

Summer is here. You want to get fit. But you are too busy. How can you get fit around your own schedule? A sport that’s cheap, where you don’t have to commit to a class at a set day, time and place. Have you thought about running? Here are my 7 reasons why I think running is the best exercise for busy mums.

7 reasons why running is the best exercise for busy mums

1. Fit running around your day

When worked I would run in the evenings. The kids were fed, on their way to bed, when King of the Mountains got back from the office, I was straight out the door.

On the days I didn’t work, I’d do the school-run-run. Run to school with the kids (they’d be on bikes and scooters), drop them off at school then continue with the run.

Now, I drop the kids off at school come home, pick up the dog and shoot out for a run. That’s the beauty of running you just simply slot it into your day.

Check out this brilliant article by Leanne Davis from Run Mummy Run on how to fit running into your busy day.

2. Running is a cheap(ish) sport

The only big investment is a good pair of trainers and a super rock solid sports bra.

It’s up to you how much you want to spend on the rest of the kit. I’m a big fan of Decathalon, and I hear Aldi does great running gear. But if you want to go all out, Sweaty Betty is fab, and the fashionistas’ favourite Lulu Lemon does running gear.

3. Running is great for your mind, body, and soul

I run for my sanity.

Running has got me through some tough times in my life – miscarriages, failed IVF, it’s kept me going when we went through rough patches with the adoption.

Running is great for reducing stress, it makes me feel happy. Running is my Prozac, running can:

  • Release endorphins
  • Give a sense of happiness and euphoria
  • Boost self-esteem
  • Increase energy levels
  • Help with weigh loss

4. Got kids? Get them to join in

Pop the kids on their bikes, scooters or skateboards and they can come out too. They are great for moral!  I’ve done this several times, me running with the dog and two kids in tow on bike and skateboard.

Got a baby? Check out this article on running buggies, pop baby in, strap him or her up and out you go!

5. Win some bling!

No one ever gave me a medal for finishing a spin class or crawling out of body pump.

But enter a real race or virtual race and you rack up the medals.

There’s nothing like that feeling when you cross the finishing line and put on that medal!

6. Turn your running into me time

That’s what running has become for me. Time to get out of the house, breathe in some fresh city air, forget about cooking meals, chasing after kids, tidying the house.

7. Make new friends

Running can open up a whole new friendship circle.

Whether you decide to join a running club or a virtual running group.  The Run Mummy Run Facebook group has over 40,000 running mummies who will cheer you through your running highs and lows.

The number of virtual running clubs and races is rising. Groups like Hogwarts Running Club, Yes Fit, The Fat Girls’ Club House getting more and more popular.

Why not give running a go.

Even though I am not yet a mom, I have a lot of friends who already have their kids and most of them opted to run to maintain their health. Thank you for sharing this! Also, I would want to ask since I mentioned health, do you have family insurance? and can you also write about it?

For the record, I am not a mother, but have many friends who are wonderful mums. Most of them work and are trying to live healthy lifestyles as well. From what I have observed (and what has arisen in conversation) is that there really is no golden moment in a day or gray time to set aside for exercising. Additionally, it also seems that using the word “find” trends to be self-defeating in their minds.

I find if I am going to run then I have to commit to it. It can be done, I managed to train for a half marathon while working, and have entered one again. It can be done!

This is such a great idea and I love how you do the school run… run. Brilliant! Do lots of parents do that in your area? I doubt I could run for more than a minute at the moment! Keep going mama 🙂 #DreamTeam xx

Yes, I completely agree with this! I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s easy to fit lots of exercise into your life (too busy and too tired are probably the biggest reasons people give for not exercising!) but I agree that running is probably the easiest one to fit into your day! I love that you run the kids to school, run back, get the dog, and run some more! I’ve taken to wearing my gym kit to the park, and doing squats between pushes, when pushing the kids on the swing, and doing a 7 minute HIIT workout-which they think is fun to try and join in with! I think caring what other people think, has gone way down my list of priorities! I’ll check out some of the Facebook groups you mentioned-it’s so nice to have a good exercise support network around you!

That’s brilliant, exercising around the kids is brilliant and they can join in and then exercise becomes part of their lives too. It’s totally a win-win scenario!

  10. June 27, 2017 / 5:28 pm

Ah I should run more. I ran a lot at school and was relatively good at Cross Country but that kinda put me off it a bit once school was over. The Hogwarts Running Club sounds amazing though!! #bigpinklink

I’m not a mum but your post even got me wanting to take up running, haha! I think you’re right: it’s an activity everyone can get involved with and have some fun. I like the idea of earning ‘medals too’ – I’m super competitive.

Running is such a convenient excercise! I miss it as my foot is poorly.

  13. June 26, 2017 / 6:52 pm

I did try running a few years back, for many of the reasons you write about. I am not a natural and unfortunately a back injury stopped me from improving. It is a great way for people to keep fit though.

I started running at the end of last year and I had never ran in my life EVER! It was amazing and I found some of myself while I was out running! Same as you I used to go out when the kids were going bed and my oh took over bedtime. Then I found out I was pregnant in March and I couldn’t keep up the running because I hadn’t been doing it long enough for my body to adjust 🙁 I’m looking forward to going back out though in December after my 6 week check! #fabfridaypost

I love that running ha got you through so many tough times. They do say that exercise is a great antidepressant / general mood booster. I also really like the fact that the hobbie is so community based and you make loads of new friends. I can’t run at all, but I love biking and yoga and I do agree, Decathlon sell some lovely gear.

I love that running is free! I gave birth to our second daughter a week ago, but once I feel up to it I really want to start running (ok…probably jogging) 🙂
