slow cooker Sri Lankan chicken curry

[ultimate-recipe-jump id=”17516″] This recipe is one that my mother makes. When I was a young girl I’d sit, on a high stool,  in the corner of the kitchen mesmerised as she’d chop and slice onions, garlic, ginger, roast and crush whole spices to conjure up her own curry powder. I haven’t been taught how to cook …

These 'beans' look like something out of a fairy t These 'beans' look like something out of a fairy tale. I mean what are they? If I throw them into the garden will I have a giant beanstalk outside my house tomorrow?

No,

These are in fact Jackfruit seeds, which can, once the pearl-like casing has been scraped, reveal a dark-marbled, chestnut-coloured seed that once prepared can be made into a curry.

I first tasted jack seed curry at my aunt's house in Madras. I'd never heard of this before. I remember loving it, scraping every last morsel off my plate.

When I returned to England, my Dad tried to recreate it, but it wasn't the same. Life carried on and I forgot about this curry.

Until recently when I was in my local Indian grocery store.
In Tooting, I am lucky to have quite a few to choose from. This is where I found these jackfruit seeds. And the distant memories of that fabled jackfruit seed curry came back.

This has set me off on a mission to create a recipe to cook with these seeds.

I've been looking at wet coconut milk-based curries and dry curries like thoran, a South Indian stir-fried vegetable curry with spices and coconut.

Either way, I know it will be delicious!

I love restaurant interiors. I love restaurant interiors.

When I’m dining out, I’m looking at the interiors as much as what’s on the menu.

Quirky furniture, a cool marble bar, vintage glassware I’m always paying attention to the little details details.

A while back we had lunch at @bardouro a small Portuguese tapas bar tucked away down the road away from the hoipolloi of Borough Market.

We perched on our seats, ate our way through salt cod fritters, the juiciest of prawns, melt in your mouth ox cheeks.

The food was fabulous, but what stole the show was the beautiful blue and white tiles, which for the duration of my meal, had me believing I was in Lisbon, not cold frosty London.

Interiors are everything!

If like me you have the latest best-selling Sri La If like me you have the latest best-selling Sri Lankan cookbook Rambutan by the fantastic @cynthia.uma you'll know how this chap is feeling...I mean who can't wait for her soon-to-be restaurant in Borough to open?

The last few years have been great for the Sri Lankan food scene.

With a slew of upmarket restaurants opening, street food stalls popping up across the country, and supper clubs where you can sample good, honest, authentic home-style cooking.

This is a far cry from when I was growing up. If you wanted to dine out on Sri Lankan food, you had to travel to the ends of the tube line to find little cafes run by the Sri Lankan diaspora. The food was always and still is great.

But now....Sri Lankan food is almost mainstream, and that's got to be a good thing!

Good luck @cynthia.uma I'm rooting for you! And wishing you the best of luck with this amazing venture!

Winter salads.

I love them.

The colours and freshness, it is sunshine on a plate.

Winter salads remind us that the wet and the cold will be gone.

In a few weeks, daffodils and tulips will start poking their green shoots out of the soil, and we will soon start to feel the gentle warmth of the spring sunshine.

I made this @ottolenghi recipe using winter tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, red onions, and a simple tart dressing of olive oil, white wine vinegar and sumac, toasted pinenuts and a little basil.

Go on, treat yourself, make a winter salad and put some sunshine on your plate.

You'll find this recipe in @guardian.

Even though it's the depth of winter and it's grey Even though it's the depth of winter and it's grey, wet, cold and miserable outside, the food on my plate doesn't have to be dull and boring!

I've been out and about in #tooting search of colourful vegetables and fruit to brighten up my meals.

Winter tomatoes, like some in this haul spring to mind.

Perfect for winter salads, slow-roasted into confit and stored in jars called upon when need to be slathered on crusty sourdough bread or mixed into pasta.

Add a few fresh tomatoes to soups and stews for richness and flavour.

The possibilities are endless.
